Mary Liu
Mary Liu (Liu Tong) is an oil painter who likes to set out. With a camera in one hand and a paint box in the other, she has worked from the piers of Shenzhen to the old lanes of Kashgar, from the rivers of Munich to the California coast — photographing first, then painting from life.
She paints returning fishing boats and lighthouses coming on at dusk, mountain streams and high-plateau blossom, classical portraits and quiet still lifes. The palette knife's weight, the Impressionists' light, and the discipline of classical realism all take their turn on her easel. Two colors are never far away: the deep blue of night, and the orange-yellow of a lamp.
